Writing

It is our intent at Marsden Junior School to provide pupils with a high-quality education in English that will teach them to speak, read and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others effectively and leave with a love of writing.

All pupils are provided with many opportunities to develop and apply their writing skills across the curriculum to enable them to write fluently and with interesting detail on a number of topics, and have an awareness of the audience, purpose and context. 

We intend for pupils to be able to foster a vivid imagination which makes for engaging and enjoyable writing by using engaging texts and stimuli in our writing lessons. Every text or stimulus for writing has been chosen because it will enthuse and motivate children; extend their vocabulary; open their eyes to texts they would not normally read; celebrate English heritage and offer children texts with culturally diverse themes.

Each year group has a clear outline of which texts to teach and when. We aim for each child to have a highly developed vocabulary and an excellent knowledge of writing techniques. This, along with, excellent transcription skills, will ensure writing is well presented and punctuated, spelled correctly and neat to ensure that learners will leave year 6 as skilled and competent writers.

Reading

At Marsden Junior School, our aim is for every child to become a fluent reader. It is our intent at Marsden Junior School to provide pupils with a high-quality education in English that will teach pupils to speak, read and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others effectively.

We want pupils to develop a love for reading and to read for pleasure on a regular basis, therefore we provide opportunities outside of our reading lessons: through daily class readers, weekly school library visits, reading reward systems and themed days, such as Breakfast with Books and Bounce for Books.
